James Orrock was a landscape painter, collector and patron. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University and studied painting under J Ferguson and J Burgess in Leicester. Following University he practised in Nottingham before moving to London, becoming a full time professional artist, writer and lecturer. His style is derived from Constable, de Wint and Cox and his peers T Collier and E M Wimperis,. He was a sound draughtsman and there is often much pencil under drawing in his watercolours. His works are represented in Newport Museum, Castle Museum, Nottingham, Portsmouth City Museum and Ulster Museum.
