A French late 19th Century Gilt Bronze Mounted Amaranth, Sycamore & Fruitwood Marquetry and Parquetry Commode a Vantaux
A very special item closely following two designs created by Riesner in 1778, one for Louis XVI's cabinet de retraite at the Chateau de Fontainebleu, later moved to his library at Versailles and the second for Pope Pius VII, also at Fontainebleu in 1801, for his visit to discuss the place of the Roman Catholic Church in post-revolutionary France, with First Consul Napoleon. The result being the Concordat 1801 which consolidated the church's position as the majority church in France and also lent its name to the commode, Commode du Concordat.
